10 Minor MCU Moments That Pissed Everyone Off
2. "It's Not Ripe" - Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2
As much as everyone talks about Joss Whedon's toe-curlingly awful quips - particularly those with ill-advisedly sexual overtones - perhaps the single flattest one-liner in the entire MCU comes courtesy of James Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
In the first half of the film, there's a recurring gag where Nebula (Karen Gillan) is desperate to munch on a yaro root - an extraterrestrial plant onboard the Milano.
When Nebula first asks for some yaro root, Gamora (Zoe Saldana) refuses, telling her "It's not ripe." Later in the film, as the Guardians escape the Sovereign fleet, Nebula again reaches for the yaro root, before Drax (Dave Bautista) kicks it away and tells her, "It's not ripe."
And finally, when the Guardians are assailed by the Ravagers, Nebula takes a bite out of the yaro root before spitting it out and exclaiming defeatedly, "It's not ripe."
It's a sitcom-level running gag that would've been considerably funnier if Nebula simply spat the root out rather than rehashing the tired one-liner for a third time.
There's a lot of great writing in Guardians Vol. 2 both comedic and dramatic, but this ain't it, chief.
