10 Misleading Movie Trailers That Scared You Off Amazing Movies
1. Super
What The Trailer Sold You:
Kick-Ass, basically. Maybe it's because the movies came out within months of each other, but it feels like the characters in Super are a lazy rehash of the still-fresh Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl, with a spiritless story to boot.
What You Missed:
The word "underrated" gets thrown around like confetti these days, but if a superhero movie from the last decade is deserving of the descriptor, it's Super.
This is not a hip, goofily funny superhero comedy. Yes, it is about Rainn Wilson turning himself into a patchwork superhero -- and there is of course some silliness built into that premise -- but the tone is so much more grim than the peppy ads imply. And it's oddly beautiful in its macabre.
Wilson's character, Frank aka The Crimson Bolt, takes himself deadly serious. After his wife leaves him for a creepy strip club owner, he takes it upon himself to rid the world of injustice. Not with superpowers, but with a wrench. It's a brutal representation of his direct, unsweetened. (Remember the scene in Walking Dead where Glenn meets Negan's bat? There's a wrenching scene in Super that's pretty damn comparable.)
If Kick-Ass fancies itself Batman, Super is The Crow.
