What begins as an advertisement for a new medical treatment, with upbeat elevator music and a cheery old doctor telling you how wonderful your life will be because of it, shortly turns into what seems to be a trailer for a fun new rom-com, starring comedy legend Jim Carrey.

The trailer is accompanied by the upbeat summer anthem Mr Blue Sky, and it introduces its extensive cast of well known actors in a way that's eerily similar to the opening credits of 90s sitcoms. We see our two main protagonists, Carrey and a brightly-coloured-haired Kate Winslet, in kooky, rom-com scenarios like shrinking so that they can bathe in a sink, and sleeping in the snow. The actors spit snarky one-liners at each other and make silly faces, but never once do you actually get to see what the movie truly is about.

In actuality, the movie plays like a depressing Black Mirror episode, with tech that ruins lives more than it helps and relationships breaking down miserably. The movie is definitely not a rom-com, in fact it feels more like an anti-romance, filled with pessimistic views on love and creepy characters that take advantage of people's vulnerabilities.

Couples that decided to see the film for date night must have had awkward, silent car rides home after as they were left to face the flaws in their own relationships.
