10 Modern Movie Soundtracks That Are Better Than The Film
7. ParaNorman
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOHoxz8zFqcThis is a pretty fantastic score by Jon Brion for a highly underrated animated movie.
The greatness of this score is clear right from the first few minutes. One of the best tracks, Norman's Walk, plays towards the beginning as Norman is heading to school.
For an animated kids film, this is a surprisingly downbeat, sad song. As it plays, we get shots of the empty streets around the town, with Norman being completely alone and getting strange looks from those around him (although in actuality, he's surrounded by ghosts that only he can see).
The track is wistful and gloomy, hammering in the film's theme of isolation and of being ostracised by those around us for being different. But just like the track gets a bit more positive at the end, we're reminded that everything's going to be okay, and we are not alone. This comes back into play later on as Norman is talking to Agatha, another character who was hunted down and feared for being different from everyone else. But she has people like Norman there for her.
Brion's score at times calls back to classic '80s horror films but is also somber and beautiful, far more sophisticated of a soundtrack than we normally get from an animated kids film. Just like the movie itself, this is a score that deserves a second look.
