10 Moments That Ruined Amazing Movie Scenes

8. The Twitter Joke - Moana

Moana It's Called Tweeting
Disney

The initial scene where Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) meets demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) is one of the film's very best.

Not only does it offer a spirited introduction to Maui, but it also establishes the entertainingly off-kilter dynamic between the two which endures throughout the rest of the movie.

But it's just tough to let go of that godawful Twitter joke.

The egotistical Maui thinks that Moana wants an autograph, and so he uses her pet rooster Heihei (Alan Tudyk) to scrawl his signature on an oar, while telling her, "When you use a bird to write with, it's called tweeting."

Now in fairness, many viewers called this eyeroll-worthy joke out back in 2016 when Moana was first released, feeling that a gag about a social media platform simply felt out of place in a fantastical Disney movie.

But it goes without saying that the joke has aged far worse than anyone could've ever expected, given the current state of Twitter - never gonna call it "X" - as a toxic cesspool at the behest of owner Elon Musk.

You can't even shut the world out and enjoy your escapist Disney media without being reminded of some of the worst aspects of online culture, apparently.

Even accepting that Disney could've never known what would become of Twitter in the decade following Moana's release, there's probably a lesson here about not referencing Very Online Things in otherwise timeless works of cinema.
