Hal Ashby's brilliant dramedy Being There boasts one of the most unforgettable endings in cinema history, when protagonist Chance (Peter Sellers) is shown taking a stroll through Ben Rand's (Melvyn Douglas) estate, where he is able to walk on water.

It's a fascinatingly ambiguous ending that's mystified and fascinated audiences for the better part of 50 years, even if the tantalising vibes of this moment are totally undercut about 10 seconds later.

For reasons that will make sense only to director Ashby, he decided to roll the end credits over a gag reel of Peter Sellers repeatedly flubbing a scene, which completely undermines the mysterious mood of the movie's final scene.

This infuriated no-one more than Sellers himself, who was irate with Ashby for doing so, believing that it took away from Chance's enigmatic nature.

Hell, Sellers even went as far to claim that this artistic choice contributed to him losing the Best Actor Oscar to Dustin Hoffman for Kramer vs. Kramer, though that's of course impossible to quantify.

All the same, a blooper reel has never seemed more jaw-droppingly out of place than at the end of this movie.
