Kevin Smith's movies all feel like a sort of stoner culture commentary, with multiple characters who you KNOW have enjoyed a smoke regularly. It might also help that he tends to hire actors who you could believe the same of. Indeed, Seth Rogen has admitted he was under the influence when making Zack & Miri Make A Porno, and he wasn't the only one.

One of the reasons one of Smith's muses - Jason Mewes - was so effective playing the part of foul-mouthed, weed-smoking lay-about Jay was that he was essentially just playing himself. He didn't need to delve very far into method to find his character, in other words.

Unfortunately, Mewes also struggled with alcohol and drug abuse for years - which actually led to Smith putting any possible future Jay And Silent Bob movies on hold in 2003. He revealed that he was drunk on Dogma "all the time" and Mewes himself confirmed that while filming Clerks, he was using:

"I was either drinking or smoking the whole time. They had to send me home sometimes. I was drinking blackberry brandy—I passed out on the floor. I was so drunk I was slurring during a scene with Randal so they had to send me home."
