After receiving an Academy Award nomination for his feature film debut in Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, Dev Patel had the world at his feet.

For his follow-up feature, the actor opted to go the blockbuster route as Prince Zuko in M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender - a film that was released shortly after Patel had turned 20 years of age.

The movie itself largely split opinion, doing just about 'okay' at the global box office and receiving so-so reviews from the critics. In terms of Dev Patel, he's since talked about how he didn't enjoy his performance in the picture and that he wished he'd said no to certain things asked of him in The Last Airbender.

As he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2016, six years after the film's release:

"I know what I'm afraid of playing: those big studio movies. After Slumdog, I did a film that was not well received at all. I completely felt overwhelmed by the experience. I felt like I wasn't being heard. That was really scary for me, and that's really when I learned the power of no, the idea of saying no. Listen to that instinct you get when you read those words for the first time."

Since his disappointing experience on The Last Airbender, Patel has gone on to have far greater success with the likes of Lion, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Hotel Mumbai, and The Personal History of David Copperfield.
