In the wake of bringing the likes of the much-loved pieces of comedy known as The Office, Extras, and Life's Too Short to screens from 2001-2013, it's now been a whopping decade since these British comedy superstars have worked together on a project.

And for those wondering why they haven't been treated to any more glorious Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais collaborations in recent times, the former had an answer for them a few years back.

Merchant revealed in an appearance at the Oxford Union in 2018 (via Digital Spy) that while there was "no reason not to" work with his long-time co-writer again on something in the future, the two have simply ended up moving in "different directions, creatively" and that's why we haven't seen them team up since 2013.

On Gervais' side, the popular stand-up star and After-Life creator noted back in 2018 that he hadn't fallen out with either Merchant or the pair's other long-time partner in crime Karl Pilkington, telling NME that the trio have just been doing their own thing.

That all being said, though, Merchant also admitted to Newsweek in late 2022 that he still admires Ricky and, despite enjoying being able to "explore other avenues" lately, he actually thinks it'd be fun to muck around with Gervais again one day "if the idea came along."

So, who knows, perhaps the days of these two comedy treasures not scribbling down comedy gold together are finally coming to an end!
