10 More Amazing Trailers That Tricked You Into Seeing Terrible Horror Movies

6. Spiral

Lionsgate

Although 2017's Jigsaw failed to reignite interest in the Saw franchise, it looked like Spiral could pull it off. Rather than trying to have some connection with the deceased Jigsaw Killer like previous instalments, this entry decided to wipe the slate clean.

Based on the marketing, Spiral was invoking the spirit of the original without imitating it. The first trailer was highly misleading, since there's no indication it's promoting a Saw sequel until the halfway point. It sets up an intriguing mystery, with Chris Rock's character trying to figure out why this new serial killer is targeting police officers. And when Samuel L. Jackson shows up and drops the F-bomb, even the biggest doubters should be sold.

But not only was Spiral a major flop, it's arguably the worst entry in the franchise, due to the predictable twist, cookie-cutter characters, forgettable traps, and boring villain. Despite being a passion project for Chris Rock, the talented comedian is completely miscast as the ball-busting cop.

Even though Spiral sets up a direct follow-up, it was abandoned due to the poor box office and critical reception.
