10 More Apocalypse Horrors That Broke All The Rules
4. Prince Of Darkness
Prince of Darkness may not be among John Carpenter's more celebrated works, but the middle entry into his Apocalypse Trilogy - also including The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness - offers up a completely unique and materially strange take on a Satanic end-of-the-world scenario.
Carpenter's film focuses on a group of quantum physics students who help a Catholic priest investigate an ancient cylinder of green liquid found in a monastery, which is said to be the sentient embodiment of Satan himself.
When the liquid begins possessing those nearby, turning them murderously violent, it falls to the survivors to try and prevent an outright apocalypse.
Carpenter has made better films, for sure, but he's perhaps never made as much of a cinematic mindf**k as this.
While just about every other movie invoking Satan goes straight for the most stereotypical imagery possible, Prince of Darkness veers in the exact opposite direction.
In turn it manages to make a giant container full of green goo one of the most terrifying images in Carpenter's entire filmography - which is certainly saying a lot.
