2. The Sadness

Though in the current era it might feel like the zombie movie is rather played-out, 2021's Taiwanese zombie movie The Sadness proved there was still plenty of room left to make audiences shocked and deeply uncomfortable.

The film takes place in Taiwan in the midst of a viral pandemic which turns the afflicted into violent maniacs, with the virus affecting the areas of the brain associated with both aggression and sex drive.

As such, the infected don't merely kill their victims - they torture and in some cases rape them.

And to make it even worse, the brain of the infected person remains in tact, ensuring that they're acutely aware of what their body is doing the entire time, hence why the infected are shown crying throughout the film.

Now to be clear, The Sadness is absolutely not for those of a queasy disposition or those easily triggered by sexually violent content, but in a period where it feels like the zombie genre had tackled every last tough-to-broach subject, this film found another to inflict a new brand of horror upon audiences.
