4. Mother Longlegs - Kong: Skull Island

If there's one thing that's worse than just plain old spiders, it's finding spiders in places they shouldn't be. That's the name of the game when it comes to Kong: Skull Island, which seems intent on traumatising audiences in the most dramatic way possible by throwing in a freaking building sized bug on the land of gigantic monsters.

Replete with Skull Crawlers, Mire Squid and Sker Buffalo as well as big old Kong himself, Skull Island could have happily kept some secrets on what insects lurk in its strange forests. Instead, we were shown what's known as 'Mother Longlegs' in all her spindly glory.

Surely a loving homage to the bug pit of the original movie, as well as a knowing wink to an infamous Cannibal Holocaust scene, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts crafts a spider with bamboo limbs that spears through the face of an unlucky soldier, before raining down fleshy hell out of its torso and threatening the rest with its pincers. Though it's taken down fairly easily in the end, it's a standout scene for just how expertly Vogt-Roberts pulls it from nowhere - turning a forest stroll into a hellish nightmare with the shift of a single stalk.
