10 More Best 'I'm Dead and I Know It' Moments In Apocalypse Horror Movies

7. Robert Capa - Sunshine

Sunshine Cillian Murphy Death
Fox Searchlight

Danny Boyle's mesmerising sci-fi horror Sunshine revolves around the crew of the Iracus II, as they mount a mission to fire a nuclear payload into our dying sun in a desperate attempt to effectively reignite it.

The film climaxes with physicist Robert Capa (Cillian Murphy) scarcely fighting off the deranged captain of the prior former mission, Pinbacker (Mark Strong), and then detonating the bomb.

Though Capa's quest wasn't initially intended to be a suicide mission, with the ship's oxygen supplies severely compromised, he's acutely aware that his now-one-way trip is imminently coming to an end.

In a gorgeous closing sequence, Capa gets a few scant moments to watch the edge of the sun expand in front of him before he's engulfed by the flames.

And while Boyle and writer Alex Garland might've been tempted to leave the mission's true outcome ambiguous, thankfully the brief final scene shows the sun shining brightly on Earth, confirming beyond any doubt that Capa's sacrifice wasn't in vain.
