What was up with that distinctive blonde waitress, Beth (Ashley Johnson), who Joss Whedon chose to focus on several times during The Avengers' Battle of New York?

Hilariously, Johnson actually filmed an entire subplot which was cut from the movie, serving Captain America (Chris Evans) his coffee in a sequence where he's shown struggling to adjust to life in the present.

She flirts with Steve, there's even an extra cameo from Stan Lee - who calls him a moron for not asking her out - and it's basically just three minutes of solid, worthwhile character development.

Furthermore, Beth was originally featured far more extensively amid the chaos of the final battle.

With the added context of these deleted scenes, we not only understand her lingered-on presence in the theatrical cut, but her shocked glance at Steve's face sans-mask.

Oddly, Whedon pulled the same trick again in Age of Ultron, shooting a deleted subplot involving a Sokovian woman and her brother, who ultimately appear briefly - and distractingly - in the third act of the final cut.
