5. August Underground's Mordum (2003)
Holding up the American flag in the Depraved stakes is August Underground's Mordum. Described by one critic as "pointless hard core depravity" - a description like that just begs to be added to my depraved list! The film is captured on home movie by two serial killers. And we all know what benevolent deeds serial killers get up to. Mordum includes: sexual arousal via self mutilation, oodles more self mutilation, the rape of a kidnapped woman, forcing a man to cut off his own penis, using the severed penis to violate the afore mentioned rape victim, the sexual abuse of two women including vomiting on them while others watch masturbating to the mayhem, the disembowelment of a woman and having sex with her innards, eating a chunk of dead, maggoty toddler, The above is a litany of Mordum's main horrors. Now folks, please believe me when I say I love pushing boundaries and I love the cinema of the extreme, but I can find no artistic merit in Mordum. It just seems to be an exercise in depravity for depravity's sake - like someone sat down and said "Let's make the most depraved movie of all time!" just for the hell of it. Salo may be disgusting, extreme and hard to watch but Pasolini was using extreme material to make a political statement. That is why his film is revered as art and Mordum will flounder in the trash stakes.
