10 More Disturbing Scenes Cut From Comic Book Movies

8. Joaquin Phoenix's "Insane" Bathtub Improv Was Too Much For An R-Rated Movie - Joker

Barry Keoghan isn't the only talented thespian to step into the iconic clown shoes over the last few years, with the mesmerising Joaquin Phoenix also dancing through Todd Phillips' 2019 thriller as the titular Joker, too.

And throughout the filming of this eventual smash hit tale of how Arthur Fleck eventually became Batman's worst nightmare, the star was said to have spent a ton of time improvising his way through certain sequences.

Most notably, Phoenix suddenly decided that he'd empty a fridge and crawl inside it in a scene that eventually made it into the flick.

However, there was actually another moment during the actor and Phillips' improvisational "studies of insomnia" that was so "insane" it wasn't actually suitable for an R-rated movie.

As the director would note in a conversation with the SBIFF Cinema Society (at 13:20 above), there was a time when his leading man did something quite unexpected in a bathtub that Phillips felt was "amazing."

And while he didn't necessarily class this as a "pornographic" moment, he still didn't think he'd get away with throwing the crazy occurrence into his picture.

Don't expect to see this piece of "insane" bathtub improv drop online any time soon either, as Phillips has openly expressed (as per Collider) his hatred for deleted scenes and claimed he will "never show a deleted scene.”
