10 More Great Actors With Terrible Last Movie Roles
6. Raul Julia - Street Fighter
First blazing a trail through the theatre, Raul Julia refused to drop his Puerto-Rican accent which was almost unheard of at the time. He found massive success in spite of the naysayers, performing in numerous Shakespearian greats as well as playing iconic characters such as Dracula and Don Quixote.
And when he came to the world of cinema, he brought that presence and penchant for theatrics with him in starring roles in Kiss of the Spider Woman, Moon Over Predator and Tequila Sunrise. Many will recognise him for his biggest blockbusters as Gomez in the Addams Family films and, of course, his final performance in the 1994 adaptation of the Street Fighter video game series.
Julia had kept his stomach cancer diagnosis quiet for the three years leading up to his death so when he arrived on-set for Street Fighter he was weaker than the crew had expected. Still, Julia gave his all to play the bombastic, over-the-top warlord M. Bison. Street Fighter has gained a cult following in that “so bad it’s good” kind of way, but regardless of the overall quality of the film, Julia’s commitment to the trashy villain is so much better than the movie deserves.
Whilst Street Fighter is Julia’s final major motion picture, made-for-TV movie Burning Season was released posthumously and the Puerto-Rican great was awarded several awards for his soul-shaking performance.
