4. Friday Night Lights
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdoOQ1JzzQ0 2004's high school sports drama Friday Night Lights depicts the journey of a football team from Odessa, Texas as they strive for a championship. The film ended up spawning an incredible successful TV series of the same name. But the best legacy this movie left was the soundtrack. Though ZZ Top and Bad Company find their music being incorporated, the majority of the tunes in this film were composed by Texan post-rock band Explosions in the Sky. Post-rock, a largely instrument based genre and often without vocals, is a style of music that appears custom-fit for film soundtracks. Explosions in the Sky, one of the foremost post-rock bands, incorporates guitar-driven hard-hitting rock chords and thrashing drum sounds with moments of near silence in which only a long note can be heard reverberating into oblivion. It's definitely more fitting for the ups and downs of a sports game than that stupid Gary Glitter song.
