One of the most hilarious tropes in blockbuster movies - particularly disaster films - is the tendency for a**hole characters to get their comeuppance in the form of extremely brutal, arguably excessive deaths.

That's certainly what happens to San Andreas' douche-canoe stepfather character, Daniel Raddick (Ioan Gruffud), who while initially presented as the charming new boyfriend of Emma Gaines (Carla Gugino), reveals his true cowardly colours when the proverbial hits the fan.

When Emma's daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) gets trapped amid the chaos of the earthquake, Daniel's self-preservation instincts kick in and he flees the scene in order to save his own skin.

Later Daniel is also seen causing the death of another man in order to save himself, but once he makes it onto the Golden Gate Bridge his number finally comes up.

A container ship ends up being catapulted into the bridge by a giant tidal wave, breaking the bridge in half, but not before Daniel is crushed to death by one of the falling shipping containers.

To maximise audience satisfaction, we linger on Daniel as he helplessly watches the ship coming his way, and looks up as the container is dropped on him.
