10 More Hardest To Watch Horror Movie Moments

1. The Cat's Out The Bag - Smile (2022)

Raw 2016

Based on the short film Laura Hasn't Slept, Parker Finn's psychological horror Smile brings with it a curse passed from person to person, which causes the host to lose touch with reality as they are haunted by a grinning supernatural being intent on ruining their life.

Its latest victim is Dr Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon), an overworked mental health professional simply trying to do her best, while maintaining a stable home life with fiancée Trevor (The Boys' Jessie T Usher) and their cat Mustache, who goes missing not long after she receives the curse.

The film's hardest to watch moment arrives at the scene of Rose's nephew's birthday party. He peels back the wrapping paper on his gift, the box's contents still hidden from view, and we realise -- far, far too late -- what's inside. His crestfallen face and Rose's cries carry the reveal before we see Mustache's body, but unsatisfied with leaving it on the edge of taste, Finn has Rose pull her furry baby from the box and pinwheel around a room of shocked and disgusted revellers screaming blue murder.

The moment is so brilliantly unwatchable because it taps into the kind of social humiliation and horror we can -- and do -- only dream of, with no way out and no route back. To cap such a grim scene, Rose falls backwards through the family's glass table, dropping the cat's corpse like a ragdoll and slashing her arms open on the landing. Not a whole lot to smile about.
