10 More Hidden Gem Zombie Movies You've Probably Never Seen
8. Juan Of The Dead
It's time to go international with this entry, as you're about to learn about one of the finest Spanish-Cuban zombie movies to ever be made (It's probably the only one). Now, don't let the terribly derivative title fool you, this is no mockbuster from The Asylum and it's so much better than that name sounds.
If anything, Juan of the Dead does Romero proud. Not because its name is a shady imitation, but because the movie imbues political subtext into the narrative. The titular hero, Juan, is a bread and butter slacker with little to do other than try and fail to reconnect with his daughter. However, when a zombie uprising presents itself, and the countries government dismisses it as a dissident uprising, a new kind of Cuban revolution begins.
Splatter and humour abound in this very slapstick zom-com feature brought to life by the political undertones it wears so proudly on its sleeve. With an 83% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 6.4 on IMDb, you can certainly do a lot worse than this international horror foray.
