10 More Horror Movie Jump Scares You’ll NEVER Forget

7. Lights Out - Don't Turn Off The Lamp

Lights Out
Warner Bros

I've snuck this entry in here like a terrifying Trojan horse (which, now that I think about it, is essentially just real world jumpscare), because I'm not talking about the Lights Out feature length movie, but the short film that preceded it.

While the theatrical release still has plenty of jumps, there's something that bit more unnerving and raw about the amateur short from the same director.

Both movies generally tell the tale of a monster who only appears when there's no light, leading to some terrifying scares where characters are flicking light switches on and off as the silhouetted monster gets closer.

The short focuses entirely on one scene where a woman home alone realises this figure is stalking her. As tensions escalate, she runs to her bed and escapes under the covers.

Thinking she's safe, she pulls them off and looks around, only to hear something crawl up next to her. Turning around, she finally sees the face of the monster, who switches off the one remaining light.

Yeah, you can tell why Hollywood was quick to snap this one up.
