6. American Werewolf In London - David's Dream

The Conjuring 2
Universal Pictures

What makes American Werewolf In London such a great werewolf movie is how surreal it is.

It's ostensibly the standard story of one man, David, slowly realising he's becoming a lycanthrope, but his growing link with the supernatural is explored through thrilling dream sequences and hallucinations.

These come after he's bitten and recuperating in hospital. While some are action packed, others are just downright traumatising.

One particularly terrifying dream sees him visualising himself becoming one with the woods, running through the wilderness naked. Later he pictures himself on his hospital bed in the woods, when the nurse he fancies comes to check on him.

Here, the asleep David suddenly wakes up, and his previously human face has transformed into a ghoulish pale white, his eyes have turned a truly demonic colour and he's sprouting huge animalistic fangs.

It's a great scare, and adds to the foreboding atmosphere that David is soon going to be less than human.
