10 More Horror Movie Jump Scares You’ll NEVER Forget

5. The Conjuring 2 - Valak Is Behind You

Say what you want about the hugely popular Conjuring franchise, but it knows how to string together a good jump scare.

The James Wan-directed entries are particularly skilled at this (unsurprising considering just how good the filmmaker is at making effective crowd pleasers), but one sequence in The Conjuring 2 takes the cake.

The demon nun Valak is already a superb villain in the sequel (even if she was neutered somewhat in her own spin-off), to the point where even her visage alone is enough to give you chills.

Not being as much of a baby as we all are though, Ed Warren actually ends up painting the spirit after wife Lorraine realises she has some kind of connection to it. Even worse, they just keep it around the house!

One sequence sees Lorraine investigating spooky noises around the house, being lured into the room with the painting by a haunting piece of a music.

For the entire scene the painting is just there in the background. You know something is going to happen at some point, but it doesn't make it any better when the real Valak appears in its place.
