The Exorcist 3 is one of the more controversial movies on this list. Some horror fans swear by it, others think it's rightly overlooked, and others still have no idea it even exists.

For my money it's a completely worthy sequel - despite the studio's best efforts - and it just so happens to feature one of the most infamous jump scares of all time.

A minute-long take all shot from one static perspective, the long shot follows a nurse locking up for the night. It's a quiet scene, with only the fumbling of keys and the shutting of doors causing any noise, but that only keeps us alert and clued in to each and every detail.

As she locks the final door, a figure in white bursts out wielding a pair of shears as the camera zooms in and the soundtrack kicks into gear.

It's the way every filmmaking technique established across the past 50 seconds is upended to accentuate the scare that makes it so good and so damn jarring.
