While surprise is key for an effective jump scare, the ones that stand the test of time are those that still hit when you know they're coming.

And when it comes to Sinister's now iconic lawnmower jump, you couldn't move on social media for people talking about this specific scene. I remember seeing everyone discussing it on Twitter at the time, to the point where I spent the whole movie waiting for it to happen.

The thing is, when it did, it still scared me silly. It's just that good.

Sinister is all about creepy home-made supernatural snuff films, and a selection of these found footage oddities are shown throughout the flick.

The scene in question comes from one of these: a simple point-of-view shot of someone using a lawnmower in the middle of the night.

The narrow field of view, the way the scene is lit only by a small torch and the incredible building score creates the sense that something truly terrible is about to happen. As the lawnmower picks up speed, you suddenly see it's aiming straight for a subdued person's face, and the soundtrack gives off a huge shriek just before it connects.
