10 More Horror Movie Performances That Proved EVERYONE Wrong

5. Dakota Johnson - Suspiria

Though she’d made a few appearances in minor roles up to that point, Dakota Johnson properly became a mainstream star when he took on the part of Anatasia Steele, the love interest/kidnap victim of Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy.

The series was roundly dismissed as smutty fodder and Johnson’s next big headline performance, the rom-com How to Be Single, didn’t fare much better. She did get some more diverse work through the likes of Black Mass and A Bigger Splash, but it wasn’t until she took part in Luca Guadagnino’s 2018 remake of Suspiria that people started to take her more seriously.

Johnson plays a dancer who earns a place at a prestigious academy in Germany. However, once she gets there, she discovers that it is actually a front for a coven of witches, which sends her life spiralling in a very dark direction.

Whilst Johnson’s performance and Suspiria itself divided opinion, the actor had proven that she was willing to take on less conventional roles. And then, a few years later, Madame Web came along and ruined all of her hard work.

Shame.
