It didn't seem possible, but 2025's I Know What You Did Last Summer may take the crown for dumbest twist in the franchise. Yes, even dumber than the "Ben-son" revelation in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

Like its predecessor, the legacy sequel follows Ava, who's haunted by the fact that she and her friends indirectly caused a death on the road the previous year. Terrified of going to jail, they make a pact never to speak of it again.

When the hook-wielding killer Fisherman starts picking them off one-by-one, Ava seek the assistance of Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray (Freddie Prince Jr.) who survived a similar incident in 1997.

In the third act, the Fisherman is revealed to be Stevie, who, at one point, was estranged from Ava's friend circle. Stevie's boyfriend was the man Ava's friends killed, which drove her to murder.

Now, there's nothing wrong with Stevie's motivation, which would serve as a fitting climax, but just as things are wrapping up, Ray is exposed as a second killer. Not only that, he admits that he went on a murder spree so people wouldn't forget about the massacre he survived.

Considering Ray was the male lead in the first two instalments, turning him into a psychopath for the sake of shock value is downright insulting. The decision could work if Ray had a more compelling reason for his unspeakable actions. Instead, the writers gave the former hero the lamest motivation, utterly destroying his character.
