8. The Group Chat Is A Joke - The Hunt
In The Hunt, a dozen gagged captives awaken in a forest, having no idea how they got there. After finding a supply of weapons, a group of unknown assailants begin mowing them down, urging them to run or hide.
Although the ensemble hasn't the foggiest what's going on, viewers are certain they are clued in. The movie opens with a group chat, where multi-millionaire socialite Athena Stone is texting her companions, telling them how she looks forward to "slaughtering a dozen deplorables" at The Manor. Based on this scene, it's a no-brainer Athena and her elite friends are hunting people for sport.
While this is true, it's not in the way one would expect. In the third act, our heroine, Crystal, comes face-to-face with Athena, who reveals the group chat was a joke. When the chat was leaked, society assumed it was true, destroying the reputations of Athena and her friends. Out for revenge, she turned "Manorgate" into a reality, hunting the very people who ruined her career.
Even though the prologue seems like a spoiler, it's a very clever red herring we all fell for.
