7. The Children's Song - The VVitch
In The VVitch, devout Christian, Thomasin, finds her family targeted by a malevolent force after being cast out of their Puritan community. When her newborn brother disappears and her father's crops fail, she suspects a witch is to blame.
Although a witch is responsible, there's a far greater threat nearby. After her whole family is killed, Thomasin learns the source of all her suffering is the Devil himself, who had taken the form of her billy goat, Black Phillip.
What makes this twist so shocking is the fact that... it shouldn't be much of a surprise. When Thomasin's siblings, Mercy and Jonas, play with the goat, they sing a song which exposes his true identity. They declare Phillip's "crown grows out of his head," since he is "king of all" who "eats the lions from the lions' den" and "we we are ye servants".
Although filmmakers tend to be coy with their foreshadowing, this melody is heard clear as day. Nevertheless, the average viewer won't pick up on this detail since, well, why would anyone think the main villain is a goat?
