In Dead Silence, Jamie Ashen finds himself being targeted by the ghost of a ventriloquist, Mary Shaw. After consulting his wheelchair-bound father, Edward, Jamie learns his ancestor, Michael Ashen, humiliated Mary during one of her shows many years ago. Out of spite, Mary murdered Michael, which led to her being lynched by the townsfolk. Reborn as a vengeful spirit, Mary vowed to wipe out Michael's bloodline.

Although Jamie usually doesn't see eye-to-eye with his father, Edward admits he's a changed man since marrying his new wife, Ella. After seemingly destroying Mary during a final act showdown, Jamie heads to his father's estate to tell him the good news, but to his horror, Jamie discovers his dear old dad is a hollowed-out corpse, with a ventriloquist pulley replacing his spine.

Through a series of flashbacks, it's shown that Mary possessed Ella and killed Edward before turning him into a real-life dummy. Using the pulley and her voice-throwing skills, she was able to give the impression Edward was alive so that she could manipulate Jamie.

Considering Edward is never seen speaking while Ella is right behind him, this revelation should've been clear as day. But by the time the credits rolled, many viewers were left looking like dummies.
