Shinchiro Ueda's horror-comedy centres around hack director Higurashi as he's trying to shoot a low-budget zombie flick. When the set is invaded by real zombies, Higurashi continues to record, hoping it'll make the movie more authentic.

Not only is One Cut of the Dead well-written and extremely funny, it's a technical marvel since the first 37 minutes are composed of a single unbroken take. Even though such a feat could be gimmicky, this one shot plays directly into the overarching narrative.

Around the halfway point, it's revealed One Cut of the Dead is a movie within a movie. The real plot involves a film crew trying to shoot a 30-minute zombie special in a single take. Believing they only have one chance to pull it off, the actors and crew are encouraged to continue filming, even if something goes wrong.

Looking back, this twist should've been easy to figure out, as there are many times the actors move in an unusual way or the camera focuses on an unimportant detail. Later, it's revealed these moments occurred due to actors missing their cue or to hide a mistake.

Also, when blood splashes on the POV camera, the cameraman blatantly wipes the blood off the lens. This moment only lasts a second, but it should've been a dead giveaway of what was really happening.
