These villains were just the beginning.

It's generally expected that the overarching villain of any horror movie is the be-all and end-all where threats are concerned - they're the ultimate roadblock to the heroes escaping with their lives in tact.

But sometimes filmmakers like to slyly toy with our expectations and have the primary villain end up facing off against an even more terrifying, insane, and downright monstrous antagonist, who typically ends up making short work of them.

And so, as a threequel to our first and second articles on the very subject, here are 10 more horror movie villains who ended up encountering something much, much worse.

These villains were all plenty horrifying in their own right, and yet each found themselves bested and outfoxed by an even more potent force which, more often than not, quickly wiped them off the map.

It's certainly a risky creative gambit that can potentially leave audiences feeling underwhelmed by a villain's death, but when it works it really works.

And in the case of these 10 horror flicks, it was mostly satisfying to see the villain get curb-stomped by something that was even more dread-inducing than themselves...

10. The Le Domas Family - Ready or Not

Day of the Dead
Fox Searchlight

Ready or Not sees newlywed Grace (Samara Weaving) learn that the family she married into, the le Domas dynasty, made an historic pact with a demonic entity.

The family received riches in exchange for agreeing to put everyone who marries into the family through a ritual, where they must play a random game from the entity's puzzle box.

If the newlywed picks Hide and Seek, however, the rest of the le Domas clan must kill them before dawn, or end up paying the ultimate price - they'll all die instead.

And miraculously, Grace indeed manages to outlast the family, at which point the surviving le Domases begin exploding into a bloody mist, the cost of their Faustian agreement finally coming to fruition.

Grace watches with perverse fascination as her ex-family perish one by one until she's the only one left standing, in what's surely one of the most satisfying comeuppances for any recent horror movie villain.
