10 MORE Horror Movies That Go Totally Insane At The End

1999's Audition doesn't actually start out as a horror film. Rather, it begins as a strange but touching romantic comedy in which widower Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) sets up a fake-audition process to find a new wife. People who'd been warned about its violence might've wondered if they'd actually walked into the wrong movie.

Well, they hadn't.

Director Takashi Miike knew exactly what he was doing here. Audition is a picture that lulls viewers into a false sense of security, slowly planting seeds of doubt regarding the intentions of Aoyama's new girlfriend before finally showing its hand in the form of a harrowing final act that delivers levels of viscous, sinister violence Western films simply wouldn't have gotten away with back then.

Eventually, it turns out that Asami (Eihi Shiina), the woman Aoyama has fallen for, is actually a deranged serial killer who subjects Aoyama to what might just be cinema's nastiest torture sequence. Others are far gorier, but it's hard to think of another that's this painful to watch.

It's said that the movie caused a lot of walkouts when it premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival, and that's hardly surprising. Audition's a great movie, but it will be too much for some, and there's no getting away from that.
