Ring centres around a cursed video tape which kills the viewer after they watch it. When the niece of a journalist, Reiko Asakawa, dies after viewing this video, she tries to learn its origins and see if there is a way to destroy it.

Reiko eventually discovers the tape was created 30 years ago by a psychic girl called Sadako Yamamura. After she was murdered, Sadako was reborn as a vengeful spirit and imprinted her rage into a video. One week after someone watches the tape, Sadako will appear before the viewer and scare them to death. However, the person can avoid suffering this fate if they create a copy of the tape and make someone else watch it.

There is another very easy way to avoid being killed by Sadako - don't watch the tape! Some of her victims knew the footage was supposedly cursed and yet, they still felt compelled to check it out. Considering all you have to do to avoid an agonising death is avoid watching a 60-second video, the victims only have themselves to blame.
