In The Untamed, a young woman called Veronica is drawn to have sex with a tentacled alien, urging her to give in to her destructive impulses.

What begins as a domestic drama about repression and infidelity mutates into a feature brimming with graphic imagery and cosmic erotica. The transition between the two conflicting genres is deliberate, making it all the more unsettling. 

Director, Amat Escalante, heightens the implausible scenarios further through an overly serious style. Long takes, natural lighting, and emotionally muted performances clash with the film’s outrageous premise.

Unsurprisingly, most of the WTF moments stems from the intergalactic cephalopod itself. However, this entity is never explained in scientific or symbolic terms. Instead, it's just... there. The extra-terrestrial doesn't operate as a plot device, but more like a force that exposes the characters’ desires and trauma. It's never established how this story should play out, so there's never a moment where everything pieces together.

Strangest of all, there isn't anything that resembles catharsis or clarity. Anybody expected answers by the time the credits roll will be left well and truly bewildered.
