3. Tale Of Tales

Directed by Matteo Garrone, the dark fantasy interweaves three stories based on 17th-century Italian fairytales. Tales of Tales explores a queen obsessed with bearing a child, a king who unintentionally has his daughter marry an ogre, and an elderly woman desperate to reclaim her youth.

Though fairytales are often toned down for the modern youth, Tales of Tales doesn't attempt to be charming or morally reassuring. Although the medieval castles and ornate costumes are lavish and beautiful, this is a world where magic is cruel, bodies are fragile, and desire regularly leads to self-destruction.

Even when the characters have their wishes granted, it comes at a great price or doesn't work out as intended. Not only that, each chapter concludes without a shred of consolation or closure.

On top of that, Tale of Tales lingers on moments etched in humiliation or death, making them more impactful and tragic. The sparse dialogue and otherworldly line-delivery makes these already miserable stories more uncomfortable.

Even if you're fully aware how unapologetically brutal old-school fairytales can be, this one is sure to shock you.
