How Dumplings came to be is as unusual as the film itself. Fruit Chan's body-horror started off as a 40-minute segment of an Asian compilation called Three Extremes. Due to its positive reception, Dumplings was expanded into a full-length feature.

The Hong Kong horror revolves around an over-the-hill soap star called Mrs. Li, who obsesses over her old life. When a chef tells her there are special dumplings that can reverse ageing, Mrs. Li is desperate to get her hands on them. But when she learns the horrifying secret how the dumplings are made, Mrs. Li is conflicted whether she should accept her age.

Though the additional scenes could've felt tacked on, Chan integrates them into the original plot seamlessly. Rather than stretching out a self-contained narrative, the extra sequences delve into Mrs. Li's dilemma in more depth. The social commentary is more noticeable here than in the original, which leaves a more harrowing impression.

Even though horror fanatics should have the literal guts for grossness, Dumplings will be an endurance test for some. If you believe the gore or concept is too extreme, it's best to switch it off to avoid being traumatised.
