10 MORE Horror Movies Where The Hero ALMOST Won
7. Zombeavers
With a title like Zombeavers, no one was expecting the artistic nourishment of an A24-lite horror experience. It essentially does what’s expected, delivering a goofy, irreverent horror comedy that prides itself on gore, laughs, and flipping tropes for punchlines. Case in point: the fate of our main protagonist.
From the movie’s opening, two zoned-out truck drivers (played amusingly by John Mayer and Bill Burr) muse on life before ploughing into a deer. A toxic liquid canister flies out of the back of their truck and lands in a lake, kickstarting the events of a film whose main antagonist is a vicious (and gloriously practical) zombie beaver.
Fast forward to the final scene, and after a barrage of crude jokes and entrails, Zoe (Courtney Palm) is the last girl standing. Having endured a night straight out of a zoophobe’s worst nightmare - and just having had to axe a zombified friend - she reaches a road and flags down a truck.
Whoops. That truck is driven by our aimless duo, and in a call-back to the opening, they smash into her without batting an eyelid. Roll credits.
It’s an ending that sucker-punches most viewers, but is not done, like in many horror titles in this list, for dramatic or traumatizing effect, but simply for laughs.
