10 More Infamous Movie Plot-Holes (Solved By Fans)
6. Why Are The Scientists So Stupid? - Prometheus
The Plot Hole:
Why do Prometheus' supposedly extremely intelligent scientists act so stupidly throughout, with so little regard for their own wellbeing that they immediately investigate unknown alien creatures?
The Solution:
Audiences make a lot assumptions here, namely that a) all scientists also have common sense and b) the crew of the Prometheus are consummate professionals.
And yet, as some fans have pointed out, in the latter case the movie basically tells us the opposite.
Peter Weyland's (Guy Pearce) planned expedition, to follow a star map in search of humanity's apparent creators, sounds like a cockamamie, crackpot scheme which would leave most legitimate scientists running the other way in order to keep their hard-earned reputations intact.
And so, it's entirely plausible that goofs like Fifield (Sean Harris) and Millburn (Rafe Spall) were basically scraped from the bottom of the barrel by Weyland as the only scientists who'd actually embark on such an absurd mission. That is to say, it's one that paid.
