10 More Infuriating Movie Cliffhangers You Didn't Realise Had Answers

9. Ray Survived - In Bruges

Big Trouble in Little China Old Man Jack Burton

Martin McDonagh has a habit of ending his movies with a big question looming over things. Did Zachariah (Tom Waits) kill Marty (Colin Farrell) in Seven Psychopaths? Who killed Angela Hayes (Kathryn Newton) in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri? How did Pádraic (Farrell) and Colm's (Brendan Gleeson) rivalry ultimately end in The Banshees of Inisherin? Did Ray (Farrell again) die at the end of In Bruges?

Even though there were no answers given within the walls of the flim, an answer for the latter can be found in the script. The scene never made it into the final cut, but it shows the intention of the final moments.

During the final shootout between hitmen Ray and Ken (Gleeson), and their boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes), the fates of two of the men were made perfectly clear. Ken fell from the bell tower to the pavement, and Harry put a bullet in his own head. Ray's however, was left more open as the film ended with him being lifted into an ambulance. Did he die, or did he survive?

The movie's script however, confirms that Ray did in fact survive. However, the guilt of accidentally murdering an innocent child didn't leave him. Three months later in London, Ray considered suicide again, and with a gun to his head, the screen would have cut to black. So technically another cliffhanger, but at the very least it confirms he wasn't killed by Harry in Bruges.
