Since 2014, the MonsterVerse has slowly but surely built itself into one of the most successful shared cinematic universes out there. That, paired with the outstanding Godzilla Minus One means that both literally and figuratively, Godzilla is one of the biggest characters in cinema today.

However, this wasn't always the case. After a poor Matthew Broderick-led outing in 1998 that suffered both critically and commercially, there was no room for the sequel that was so clearly teased at the very end of the film. What exactly was going to happen with that clutch of 'Zilla eggs?

According to the producer and co-screenwriter of 1998's Godzilla, Dean Devlin, the tease was to lead into a sequel and ultimately a trilogy, with the next destination being Monster Island. Matthew Broderick would have returned and found himself on the legendary island, where the offspring of Godzilla would have faced off with the likes of Mothra and Rodan.

In a similar way to how Godzilla has been portrayed in the MonsterVerse, this new iteration would have ultimately become a heroic version of the original monster that terrorised the world in the first film. This was supposed to be a redemption of sorts for not making 'Zilla an outright hero straight away, but never came to fruition outside of a cult-favourite animated series.
