10 More Mismatched Movie Enemies

9. Ariel vs. Ursula (The Little Mermaid)

Ariel-and-Ursula

Ariel gets away with everything. Ariel is that girl you went to high school with who got by on her looks and her daddy€™s credit card. She got all the parts in the plays because she could sing, and she was so much prettier than you, and you just wanted to grab her by her flowing red locks and tell her to shut the ever-loving hell up because dammit how is it that no one has called her out already? Ariel isn€™t capable of defeating Ursula, a sea creature so much smarter than her and many other materialistic and shallow mermaids. There is nothing in the film that shows Ariel having any logical intelligence; she acts on impulse which is the source of all her troubles. If she ever stopped for a moment and thought about the implications of her actions, maybe she€™d be better off. So what happens when Ariel and Ursula face off? Does she impulsively try to defeat the sea witch alone, sacrificing herself for the better good of her loved ones? No, instead she lets her aquatic friends destroy the necklace that Ursula was wearing to expose her, lets her father get physically tortured, and lets the man she loves drive the boat into her chest cavity. To which Ariel is immediately rewarded by getting absolutely everything she wants and learning nothing from the experience.
