7. The New Yorkers vs. Doctor Octopus (Spider-Man 2)
In the wake of the forth coming Amazing Spider-Man movies, parts 2, 3, and 4, many characters and villains are being thrown around in the rumor pool. One name that hasnt been mentioned, if at all, is Doc Ock who is considerably one of Spider-Mans better-known villains. Perhaps thats because there is a fear of audience reception to rebooting the character since Spider-Man 2 seemed to absolutely nail Doc Ock the first time. While Sam Raimis Spider-Man movies have come under a lot of scrutiny for being campy and cheesy in the wake of edgier superhero films, Spider-Man 2 is still considered to be one of the better sequels in a superhero franchise. Spider-Mans action scenes with Doctor Octopus are a strong argument for why. However while Spider-Man is more than up to the challenge to fight the mechanical arms of Doc Ock, a slew of New Yorkers on a train are certainly not. The scene reeks of sentimentalism with all the passengers promising to keep Peter Parkers identity a secret although its not like he said his name and what were they expecting to be under the mask when he took it off anyway?-. They stand up to Doc Ock declaring that if you take on Spider-Man youre taking on all of New York. Thats all fine and dandy but there are small children on this subway and you want to challenge a deranged man with machines he cant even control? Luckily Spider-Man saves the day and the first two movies post-9/11 patriotism come across now as incredibly dated.
