When it comes to characters with unfortunate endings, there is no one more suited than the master of misery himself, Stephen King.

In 2007, King’s novella The Mist got the big screen treatment, introducing a new audience to one of his darkest finales. The story centres on David Drayton who, along with his young son Billy, gets trapped in a supermarket by a mysterious fog that envelops their town. Fog is one thing, but this one houses various creatures that have no problem devouring anyone who comes near them.

After surviving a series of interpersonal conflicts with the other people in the store, David and Billy make it to their car and drive away. However, when they return home, they find that David’s wife has been killed.

Seeing no other option, David decides to perform a mercy killing on his son and then take his own life. He shoots Billy dead, but just as he’s waiting to be eaten by the creatures, the army arrives. They have rounded up all of the beasts and cleared the fog.

David just killed his son for no reason.

Well done, Mr. King, you’ve done it again.
