10 More Movie Answers Given YEARS Later

3. What Was The Monster's Origin? - Cloverfield

Die Hard Hans Gruber Mystery
Paramount Pictures

Certain movies and characters can benefit from leaving big questions unanswered, particularly when it comes to monsters. For example, Bird Box kept its monsters off screen, leaving them up to the individual imaginations of the audience, and in a similar way, Cloverfield gave little information about the beast that wreaked havoc upon New York.

This lack of any solid information, and in this movie's case, a motive, adds intrigue and another level of fear. A villain is so much worse when you can't even understand why they are doing what they are doing. How are you supposed to fight back or survive against something like that?

It wasn't until 16 years later that director Matt Reeves revealed the background of the alien. For starters, it was confirmed that it was in fact an alien, and that the meteor seen in the film was actually the beast coming to Earth for the first time.

For the rest of the story, the alien was a baby suffering from separation anxiety caused by being away from its parents. This is why it was acting out the way it was, just as scared as the people of Earth it was terrorising.
