10 More Movie Scenes Shot For Real
5. Dunkirk - Dogfighting
Determined to go one better a few years on from dropping a prop plane out of the sky, Christopher Nolan decided to give us our most intimate look at aerial warfare to date by the time Dunkirk erupted onto our screens in 2017.
In order to achieve the striking shots of Spitfire's being tailed and attacked by Messerschmitt in the skies, Nolan had the planes used in the flick fitted with IMAX cameras and each aircraft rigged with a dual-cockpit to assist the filming process. On top of equipping the various planes involved in the actual manoeuvres seen in the finished article with cameras, a Piper Aerostar, boasting an IMAX camera on its front and back, was also used to pick up footage of the awe inspiring aerial duels.
In one of the more shocking turn of events to go down whilst filming the World War II epic, one of the aforementioned planes that was ditched in the English Channel during the sequence that sees Jack Lowden's Collins trying to evacuate the aircraft sank quicker than expected. Then, after eventually rescuing the plane and the IMAX camera within it, Nolan was able to salvage the footage and ultimately use it in the film.
