10 More Movies That Accidentally Filmed Things You Weren't Supposed To See
4. A Car In The Shire - Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
Not every movie has the same opportunity to cover up mistakes like Shazam! The crew that was filmed could relatively easily be transformed into part of the crowded mall scene, but Peter Jackson had a bigger problem when a car appeared in the background of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
It's one of the many scenes that paint Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) as the reluctant hero, as he stops in his tracks to comment on one more step being the farthest he's ever been from home. In the background of the theatrical release, a car and the subsequent dust it kicked up from the road could be seen.
Hiding a vehicle like this in the Shire is a much greater task than people in a busy shopping center, and so for the DVD release Jackson removed the car altogether. Unfortunately, it seems that enough people noticed the anomaly in the first place that it became something of a sticking point.
Eventually, despite denying the car's existence to begin with, Jackson admitted to the gaffe. Perhaps if it could have been blended in in some way, those who noticed it may have thought they were initially mistaken, but the fact that there was nothing there at all on the home release proved to be just too suspicious.
