10 More Movies That Accidentally Filmed Things You Weren't Supposed To See
2. A Rogue Fly - Raiders Of The Lost Ark
There are so many different factors that go into crafting a compelling antagonist, particularly as an opposite number to such a great hero. The villain can easily get overshadowed and drowned out by a strong protagonist presence, which is why too many bad guys in movies are just too darn forgettable.
Take Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones. In his debut in Raiders of the Lost Ark, he was announced as a new iconic hero that would ultimately still be relevant over 40 years later, and so the villain had to be equally powerful against him. Arguably, the scene that did more for René Belloq (Paul Freeman) as a bad guy than any other happened completely by accident.
During the scene in which Indy threatens to blow up the Ark of the Covenant to stop it from falling into Nazi hands, Belloq has a few lines of dialogue that have their focus completely pulled by the fact that the guy ate a fly. It lands on his cheek, crawls into his mouth, and Belloq just continues talking without missing a beat.
Of course, there was absolutely no way to plan the fly landing on Paul Freeman's face, however, according to the actor himself, it did fly off again, only Steven Spielberg clipped out a few frames to give the illusion that it crawled into his mouth. This went from a fly potentially ruining a shot to an iconic scene in the Indiana Jones franchise. When life gives you lemons, eh?
